Composite Bonding

What is composite bonding?

A composite resin is used to build a new surface on top of your existing tooth, whether to change the appearance of the tooth or to fill gaps. Unlike other cosmetic treatments, composite bonding does not require any changes to your teeth – everything can be done in one visit. The resin used will be colour-matched to your teeth to ensure a discrete result.

Is it the same as veneers?

Porcelain veneers involve trimming a small amount of enamel off your teeth so that the veneers can be fitted, whereas composite bonding does not. The composite resin is also a different material to the ceramic porcelain used in veneers.

Can I have composite bonding?

Composite bonding is suitable for most patients, but we recommend having a consultation with a dentist to find out what is right for you.

Does it hurt?

As there is no tooth preparation, composite bonding is not painful and does not require anaesthetic.

How long does composite bonding last?

With proper care and hygiene, composites regularly last 10-15 years before they need replacing. We recommend replenishing your composites every 3 years to keep them looking natural and flawless.

How do I care for composites?

You need to keep your composites clean just like you would your teeth – brushing twice a day, flossing once, and minimizing consumption of stain-prone liquids like tea, coffee, and wine. Eating solid foods like hard sweets and ice cubes is not recommended, as these are much more likely to damage both your teeth and your composites.

Teeth Whitening

What is it?

Tooth whitening lightens teeth and helps to remove stains and discoloration. Whitening is among the most popular cosmetic dental procedures because it can greatly improve how your teeth look.

Things have changed quite a bit over the last 2 years when it comes to brightening your smile! Laser tooth whitening has almost become a thing of the past, changes to the law limit the amount of hydrogen perioxide to 6% and now only we as dentists can dispense this to you.

For patients this means the safest and most effective way to whiten your smile is to use a home whitening kit, with specially made trays to deliver the whitening gel to the right areas and protect the delicate areas of your mouth (tissues). Here at Cork Dental Clinic we still use the ZOOM system for certain cases but mostly provide the at home teeth whitening kits for patients.

Why Whiten Teeth?

Your smile can make a huge difference to your confidence and self-esteem. As we get older, our teeth naturally darken and this can be affected by various factors, however this process can be accelerated with staining foods and drinks. Over time you may feel that your teeth are not as bright as they used to be and after undergoing a cleaning to remove any stains on the outside of your teeth, it may be suitable for you to brighten your smile by using a specially designed Home Whitening Kit.

How Does it Work?

Home teeth whitening is an easy, non-invasive, cosmetic treatment which produces beautiful results. Specially designed trays are made to deliver a specially formulated whitening gel to remove stains that have built up over years. This has been proven to have no long term negative effects on the enamel of teeth, on the dentine of teeth or the gums.

What It’s Used For?

The outer layer of a tooth is called the enamel. The color of natural teeth is created by the reflection and scattering of light off the enamel, combined with the color of the dentine under it. Your genes affect the thickness and smoothness of the enamel. Thinner enamel allows more of the color of the dentine to show through. Having smoother or rougher enamel also affects the reflection of light and therefore the colour.

Every day, a thin coating (pellicle) forms on the enamel and picks up stains. Tooth enamel also contains pores that can hold stains. The most common reasons for teeth to get yellow or stained are:

  • Using tobacco
  • Drinking dark-coloured liquids such as coffee, fizzy drinks, tea and red wine
  • Not taking good care of your teeth
  • Ageing also makes teeth less bright as the enamel gets thinner and the dentine becomes darker.

It is also possible to have stains inside the tooth. These are called intrinsic stains. For example, intrinsic stains can be caused by exposure to too much fluoride as a child while teeth are developing. Other causes include tetracycline antibiotics. They can stain a child’s teeth if taken by a mother during the second half of pregnancy or by a child who is 8 years old or younger. Teeth are still developing during these years. Trauma may also darken a tooth.

Tooth whitening is most effective on surface (extrinsic) stains.

White Fillings

White Fillings

Unfortunately, most people need fillings… However, nowadays fillings are not only functional, but can be natural looking as well.

Unlike the traditional silver fillings, white fillings have the distinct advantage of not being visible when you laugh or smile. In addition, white fillings are different to silver fillings, as they stick to the teeth, which means that they can also be used to repair teeth that have been chipped, broken or decayed.

White fillings come in a range of shades to closely match your existing tooth color which gives a totally natural appearance.

  • A wide variety of shades
  • Repair chipped or broken teeth
  • Gives a totally natural look
  • Reshape or rebuild teeth
  • No unsightly silver fillings

The dentist will normally perform this treatment under a local anesthetic in order to numb the area around the tooth. Any decay or old filling will then be removed if necessary before the white filling is put in. To harden the filling, the dentist will point a bright light onto it, ensuring that your eyes are protected throughout the process. At the final stage of the treatment, the dentist will trim and polish the filling.

As white fillings come in a range of shades, the dentist will be able to provide the closest colour match to your own teeth. White fillings can also be used to reshape and rebuild teeth that are broken or have been worn down, due to the sticky material that is used. A tooth that is going to have a white filling requires less preparation compared to a silver filling. However, white fillings are not as strong as silver fillings, which means that they may not be suitable for large fillings in back teeth.

Veneers

Veneers

There’s no reason to put up with gaps in your teeth or with teeth that are stained, badly shaped or crooked. Today a veneer placed on top of your teeth can correct nature’s mistake or the results of an injury and help you have a beautiful smile.

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-coloured materials designed to cover the front side of teeth. They’re made by a dental technician, usually in a dental lab, working from a model provided by your dentist.

You should know that this is usually an irreversible process, because it’s necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from your teeth to accommodate the shell.

Your dentist may recommend that you avoid some foods and beverages that may stain or discolour your veneers such as coffee, tea or red wine. Sometimes a veneer might chip or fracture. But for many people the results are more than worth it.

Everybody loves a bright white smile, and there are a variety of products and procedures available to help you improve the look of yours.

Many people are satisfied with the sparkle they get from brushing twice daily with a fluoride-containing toothpaste, cleaning between their teeth once a day and the regular cleanings at your dentist’s office. If you decide you would like to go beyond this to make your smile look brighter, you should investigate all of your options.

Orthodontics

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialised area of dentistry that involves the treatment of dental and facial irregularities. It is the science of assessing, diagnosing and treating crooked teeth, jaw discrepancies, facial profile and form. Orthodontists are dentists who have undertaken many years additional training in this specialist area.

To see if you could benefit from Orthodontic treatment answer the following questions.

  • Are your teeth noticeably crooked?
  • Do you have gaps between your teeth?
  • Are your teeth crowded?
  • Do you have protruding teeth?
  • Do you have a deep overbite (front teeth overlapping too much vertically) or an open bite (where some teeth cannot be brought into contact?)
  • Do you have difficulty chewing food?
  • As part of dental management to facilitate replacement of missing teeth for example with dental implants.
  • Finally, if you are reluctant to smile, laugh or even talk in public without hiding your teeth, it is time to consider orthodontic correction.

Am I too old?

The correction of an orthodontic problem can be undertaken at any age. Adult orthodontic treatment is growing rapidly. It is generally recommended that children should be brought in for their first evaluation at ages 7 to 9 years.

Benefits of Orthodontics

The main aim of orthodontic treatment is to create straight teeth that look great! This will help you feel good about your appearance, thus improving your confidence and self esteem. Just as important as looking great is a healthy environment in which your teeth with good care can last a lifetime.
